The 8 best afternoon tea Liverpool: a local’s guide

Are you looking for the best afternoon tea Liverpool? As a dedicated devour-er of cake and Liverpool local, I’m your gal to give you the lowdown.

This guide contains Liverpool’s best afternoon tea in the city centre but if you’re up for travelling a little further, comment below and I’ll spread the net a little wider with a follow up for all my favourite options on the Wirral. After all, excellent sweet treats are worth travelling for.

Note – I find afternoon tea famously difficult to take a good photo of, so I’m crediting virtually all the below to their respective restaurants.

Cuthbert’s Bakehouse

I couldn’t start with anywhere but Cuthbert’s. My go-to for afternoon tea at any time of year, Cuthbert’s Bakehouse is brilliant at catering for dietary requirements, different age groups and the changing seasons. My friendship group has always been a big fan of the Christmas version!

In lockdown, we even enjoyed their afternoon tea to go and I’m pleased to report they’re still offered if you’ve got a special occasion that you’d rather enjoy in the comfort of your own home.

Cuthbert’s Bakehouse are serving the best afternoon tea in Liverpool from Tuesday to Sunday. Classic afternoon teas are £25pp including unlimited tea or coffee or £31pp to upgrade to a boozy drink.

Oh Me Oh My

A popular tea house and wedding venue in the Grade II-listed West Africa House, Oh Me Oh My isn’t only about its location opposite the Three Graces. It’s desirable for its gorgeous fairy-light bedecked interior as well as its sweet treats!

Along with the standard afternoon tea, they also offer special events (e.g. a spooky Halloween theme!) and a disco afternoon tea that sounds SUPER fun with a live DJ. There’s also Goodness Gracious, their rooftop terrace famous for its views, for a pre- or post-cake drink.

Afternoon tea at Oh Me Oh My Liverpool is available from £31.95pp on selected dates around weddings and events, so book in advance – especially for the themed events. Veggie, vegan and gluten-free menus are available, as are supplements for alcoholic drinks.

Panoramic 34

Another afternoon tea promising epic views, Panoramic 34 is all about the experience. With Classic and Luxury options on offer (the difference being a glass of wine, Champagne or selected cocktail with the Luxury afternoon tea), the menus boast delicious-sounding flavour combinations.

Classic afternoon tea at Panoramic 34 is £40pp, with a +£15pp upgrade to the Luxury afternoon tea. They cater for vegan, gluten free, sugar free and nut free dietaries too!

The Botanic Tearoom at The Municipal Hotel

The 5* Municipal Hotel has taken Liverpool by storm and afternoon tea at The Botanic Tearoom is high on my list to try. As with some of the other venues, they offer different themes and seasonal variations that I’m intrigued to see if they live up to the bigger price tag.

Afternoon tea at the Municipal Hotel is served daily between 12:00 – 17:00 for £49pp or £59pp with a glass of champagne. Vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free options are available.

The London Carriage Works

Nestled within Hope Street Hotel, a beautifully tranquil venue between Liverpool’s two cathedrals, The London Carriage Works has a reputation for quality cuisine.

Along with their restaurant menu, their afternoon tea features classic finger sandwiches and patisserie, as well as a warm savoury option in many. Seasonal offerings, such as festive afternoon tea, are available for a small supplement.

The London Carriage Works afternoon tea is available daily between 12:00 – 15:00 for a reasonable £35pp. Upgrades to Prosecco and Champagne are available and they can accommodate vegan and gluten-free afternoon teas with 48 hours notice.

Voyagers Restaurant & Bar

One that in all honesty, I hadn’t heard of until I started researching this article, I love the unique sound of afternoon tea at Voyagers.

With a tribute to the Beatles in ‘Strawberry Fields’ macarons and sausage rolls with a twist of scouse, I always enjoy when an afternoon tea pivots from sandwiches to fun savoury options.

Afternoon tea is available at Voyagers at 12:00 – 17:00, Monday – Saturday. Prices start at £32.50pp, with Prosecco and Champagne upgrades available for a supplement.

Jam

A classic Liverpool venue for baby showers and hen dos, Jam is honestly a bit too Instagrammy for me but popular and tasty nevertheless. They’re used to hosting big groups so the afternoon tea runs super smoothly and the food is good too!

It’s not necessarily a venue I’d recommend for a sophisticated experience or a casual weekend outing, but if you’re wanting to celebrate somewhere that looks the part, Jam is a great option.

Jam serve classic and vegetarian afternoon tea for £26pp on Saturday & Sunday. Vegan and gluten free options are available with 24 hours notice at a +£2pp supplement.

Gino D’Acampo Sky Bar Liverpool

Another afternoon tea with a view, this one with an Italian twist.

With a deli selection including bruschetta and sweet treats from tiramisú to panna cotta, this is a great way to enjoy an afternoon of drinks and delicious food.

Sky Bar Liverpool offers afternoon tea daily between 12:00 – 16:00, with dietaries catered for within 48 hours notice. Standard afternoon tea is £34pp, with Prosecco available from £39pp and Champagne from £49pp.
