With a long weekend booked, I wanted to do something special with my extra day off. After reading my review of Bills in Liverpool, they got in touch asking if I would like to have dinner there one evening. Of course, I was thrilled to accept and couldn’t wait to spend an evening in such lovely surroundings. With quirky decor, it manages to remain unique and individual-looking among a host of familiar chains also occupying Liverpool One.
I was pretty gutted to get to Liverpool, dressed up for date night, only to remember that I’d forgotten my camera! So, whipping out the trusty iPhone, we got down to the business of ordering drinks. Nick decided to try out ‘Bills Beer’ – he was a fan! – while I went for an Amaretto Sour. Utterly delicious and it went down a treat alongside the water on our table that was topped up regularly.
Our friendly waiter Matt was incredibly helpful when it came to recommendations – honest and completely approving of our choice of starter. We both went for the Mini Cumberland Sausages that came in this cute serving dish, covered in a honey and grain mustard. The sauce wasn’t too overpowering but added a gorgeous hit of flavour to the steaming hot and tasty sausages. A decent portion size too – I had to restrain myself to make sure I had room for a dessert later on. Always planning ahead….
When it came to mains, the choice was tough. I was mightily tempted by the burger but in the end, went for an old classic of Bills beer-battered cod, accompanied by chips, mushy peas, pickled onion and tartare sauce. Being a lover of peri-peri, Nick decided to try out their own Peri-Peri Marinated Chicken with sweet potato fries.
I have to confess, I had to take a bite of Nick’s chicken too after he described it as ‘succulent’. It was too good, with a kick but not enough heat to make a wimp like me start gulping my drink. There was so much on the menu that sounded amazing, I’m already planning my next trip back!
Now, a lot of you may know that dessert is where I really come alive. Cakes, sweets, chocolate – throw it all my way and watch me dive in. After I went for afternoon tea with Hollie last month, I knew that the standard of cake was pretty darn high so I had to enlist the help of Matt again when it came to choosing. Eventually, I picked the Sicilian Lemon Drizzle Cake while Nick went for the Sticky Toffee Pudding with Banana ice cream from the Specials menu.
Despite being nearly full to bursting, we ate every last bit with enthusiasm. Even thinking about it when I write this now, my mouth is watering! For a bit of fun, we decided to buy a few items from the Bills shop to try too…
As I’m sure you can tell by how happy I sound writing this, the whole meal was utterly gorgeous. To have some quality time with Nick to chat and relax in some beautiful surroundings, I felt very lucky indeed and the whole experience was fabulous. A special thanks have to go to Matt and also the manager (also called Matt!) who went out of their way to make sure we were happy and smiling for the entire time, as well as the team at Bills who invited me to try the dinner menu. I’ll be back again a lot in the future, I can tell!
