Rococo Coffee House review: The Best Cafe in Liverpool [2024]

I discovered Rococo Coffee House more than a decade ago and ever since, it’s remained my favourite haunt for lunch with a friend or even a relaxing solo trip.

Located inconspicuously above a shop on Lord Street, you can find the entrance near Cavern Walks. Up a flight of stairs leads you into the cutest cafe with three separate sitting rooms – and now an upstairs too! – all decorated beautifully with chandeliers, sofas, armchairs and potted plants. Exposed brick walls contrast with patterned wallpaper and in some of the rooms, original features like ornate fireplaces remain.

Back in the day it used to be be reliably quiet so I could bag my favourite window seat overlooking Lord Street, but now it’s popularity has soared. Luckily, there’s a lot of space and you can reliably bag a table, before queuing up at the bar to order your delicious snacks and drinks.

Despite the busy atmosphere, I did manage to snap some of my favourite quirkier features however, like the piano sitting next to the bar and racks to hang your coats.

Now, onto the food. It’s simple, yet effective, with all your classics like toasted teacakes, paninis and even soups served with a French baguette. The hot chocolate is top notch – who needs Costa or Starbucks when you have your local independent, right? – and I’ve got a soft spot for the smoothies too. It’s way more affordable than your local chain too: like everywhere else, prices have increased slightly in recent years, but a hot chocolate still comes in at £2.80.

Staying the night? I always use Booking.com to book my city breaks!

Rococo Coffee House also serve the most amazing array of homemade cakes – what exactly you’ll get depends on the day, but they never fail to make my mouth water.

The food always comes quickly and the service is great too. I’ve had so many heart to hearts with friends here, or sat alone reading my book after the hustle and bustle of shopping on the streets below.

Their expansion over the years is testament to how popular it is among Liverpool locals, although its inconspicious location makes it lesser-known among visitors – a top tip if you’re planning a city break to Liverpool!

For literally years, I've been walking past the sign for Rococo and thinking, "Ooh I should try that place!" And I never do…but now I think I will!
